"Border Collies have a double coat...this helps your dog regulate its temperature"

Have you ever thought grooming your Border Collies was a waste of time and money? This blog post is here to set the record straight and convince you why grooming your Border Collies isn't just to make them look fabulous...
We thought it was best to bring in an expert to explain why you should keep your Border Collie well groomed.
Lisa Baxter is head dog groomer and owns Maggie's Dog Cafe with her fiance, Stephen. Lisa is also solely responsible for Whisky and Cider's fabulous puppy furdos and the reason they smell so delicious! So you can trust that Lisa really knows her stuff...
Why is it important to have your border collie groomed?
"Grooming your dog is an important part of owning a long coated breed, it is important to introduce brushing to your pup as soon as possible and it should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your pup. Border Collies have a double coat, an under coat which sheds and guard hairs on the top layer. This coat helps your dog regulate its temperature so it stays cool in summer and warm in winter but it can only do this if the coat is taken care of properly, it is important to brush out any loose under coat to stop the coat from matting and so your dog can regulate their body temperature!"
Gold Collies can second this! We wished we had started Whisky and Cider much earlier to stop the dreadlocks from forming in the first place!
"These coats should not be clipped. Tools you can use for brushing are a slicker brush and a Coat Rake or Coat King to help remove the under coat and a comb to find any knots, brushing should be done on a daily basis especially during summer when your dog will be dropping a lot of undercoat and when it’s most important for your dog to be able to keep cool! You can also take your dog to your local groomer, the professional groomers will use products designed to help remove the undercoat along with a blow dryer which will also help to remove the undercoat"
A reminder not to whip out those old scissors and attempt the deed yourself (the equivalence- attempting to cut your kids hair-the end result a bowl cut)
"It is recommended to visit your local groomer every 4-6 weeks for a Deshedding appointment and to have their nails trimmed! If you are going to take your dog to a grooming salon then please also introduce them early , after their vaccinations but before 16 weeks during their critical learning period".
If you haven't already, go to Maggie's Cafe and treat yourself (to a great coffee) and your Border Collie to a Puppicino! This is great timeout for you and good social training for your Border Collie.
