Toxic Foods for Border Collies

Most of us have given our border collie a sneaky bit of what we are eating. I mean how could you not when they look at your with those puppy dog eyes?

But dogs can’t eat what we eat…

Here we round up 4 no no’s for your border collie

1. Chocolate- chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine. These two are not good for a dog’s nervous system and can be fatal in high doses. Because dogs cannot metabolise theobromine quickly, it can lead to diarrhea and vomiting. Keep your chocolate out of reach from dogs.

2. Avocados-definitely no smashed avo on toast for your pooch please! The toxic component in the avocado is persin. The large seeds can also get stuck in the digestive tract of the dogs. Seek medical advice if you suspect your border collie has swallowed a seed! Put them in the bin instead of the compost in case puppy digs it up!

3. Apples and stone fruits (cherries, peaches etc)- the seeds from these fruits contain a compound similar to cyanide and symptoms can include shock, difficulty breathing and hyperventilation. Although, apple skins are ok in small amounts.

4. Fatty foods- A surprising one isn’t it? We have firsthand experience with this one. We gave Cider some left over fat from cooking (about 2 tablespoons) and she ended up with pancreatitis! It was lucky that Cider resolved quickly (2 days) without intervention. But always contact your vet to check. Signs to look for are adnominal pain and vomiting. Cider was very hunched over and it was painful to touch her stomach.

This list is by no means exhaustive. Some more are grapes, nutmeg, xylitol and onions. Basically keep your border collies diet simple with some raw Big Dog food and Vetalogica Kibble. Stay golden. The Gold Collies Family.
